Sitemaps, done correctly, can service visitors using alternate web-viewing platforms (like cell phones and PDA's), provide a direct pathway to the desired information, and put website content in a context that may be easier to navigate.

Sitemaps are used by each of the major search engines to create deep-linking references to pages throughout your website. Provided that the sitemap is part of an overall strategy to generate fresh, relevant copy about the topics important to your site visitors, submitting an included sitemap to Google. Yahoo, Live, and Overture, among others, increases the likelihood of favorable indexing.

It is important to remember, however, that failure to keep the sitemap and website current and in sync can actually cause more harm than good.
